The new contemporary opera follows Ava, an academic and writer whose book ‘The Aphrodite Complex’ catapults her into sudden fame after it is adapted into a popular documentary. Thrust into a seductive world of beauty and desire, Ava’s pursuit for personal perfection leads to isolation rather than connection; the appearance of the goddess herself only complicating everything she previously believed. This sharp libretto delves into how the beauty myth, influenced by the legacy of the goddess Aphrodite, distorts our search for love and belonging, ultimately finding that real connection can only emerge when we are truly seen.
Directed by Alexander Berlage, with a libretto by Laura Lethlean, Aphrodite stars Jessica O’Donoghue as Ava and Puerto Rican soprano Meechot Marrero as Aphrodite in her Australian debut.
