The undertaker has arrived to take you to your final resting place.
And you’re happy about it. Eora/Sydney band ‘Bennetts Grove’ wraps post punk and alternative rock up with a grungy bow on top with new self-titled EP release. Seven tracks full of feeling and fight.
Made up of a powerhouse four; Sam Ward as front man, Mia Betteridge as bassist and visual designer, Sunny Capron as drummer and mixing engineer, and Oscar Braddy on the guitar. Together they bring a tight sound. Curling licks from the guitar twirling along with the thrum of the bass. The drums add a classic post punky thrashing energy which paired with Sam’s timeless rasping vocals layers on the grit. The two part ingredient list for post punk. Mia’s visuals for the EP cover is the juicy red maraschino cherry on top. Dark and beautiful. Suited to the sound.
The EP kicks off with ‘Innocence’ and instantly sweats dripping. You can’t help but bounce about. But watch out, avoid the Doc Marten to the face when ‘Foresight’ drops in. The opening dreamy guitar sent me back to the emotional tug of King Krule, then as it builds up and kicks out a heavier punkier sound attune to the sound of Fontaines D.C., I can feel the energy. Hooked. Penultimate track ‘Out in the Cold‘ leaves you with an emotional shiner regardless. Mia’s hauntingly ethereal vocals pushes and pulls against Sam’s heavier tone. The EP is earnest yet punchy. I’m listening and I’m with the band in what they felt making these tracks. You can hear synchronicity between all the instruments; four mates making music. Right and proper.
The band promises more music on the horizon. Catch them on their EP release tour supporting Shady Nasty which has already kicked off. They have more shows along the east coast ahead.
