Sabine and Darcey discuss "The Handmaiden" directed by the acclaimed Park Chan-wook, a film which explores South Korea during the 1930's Japanese occupation through the perspective of a Handmaiden, and a part of New Queer Cinema for our Pride Month programming this June.
It's an adaptation of the UK Novel "Fingersmith" written by Sarah Waters. We talked about the many controversies around the film, our admiration for Park Chan-wook, and the male gaze.
STANDOUT MOMENT:
Sabine's standout moment from was the reoccurring sex scene that was revisited throughout the film. Whilst not her favorite moment, this is what will stick with her as it shaped the film and yeah, you should watch it.
Darcey's standout moment was when the first big reveal happens. We don't want to spoil it for you, but the plot twists in this film are crazy. Continuous revelations.
