This weeks Mubi Monday focus films was "Solo Sunny" - Konrad Wolf (1980)
My (Sabine's) standout moment of the film were the multiple glances into the older, post-war attitudes towards music and entertainment. The film centers around Sunny, a singer who tours with a larger band and ensemble of other artists - including gymnasts, dancers, and mediocre comedians - who earn their living from appeasing seemingly unmoved audiences across Germany. The performance seems to me as a modern viewer to be at a higher calibre than any amateaur program I've bared witness to, however no one in the crowd is moved.
It would be remiss to not mention the insane performance put down by Renate Krössner. Every other featured artists or actor pales in comparison. I'm of the belief that this film would not have been half as a "cult classic" without her.
