Sabine and Omar talk about Cheryl Dunye's pioneering film "The Watermelon Woman", as a very apt and essential work in the history of New Queer Cinema for our Pride Month programming this June.
STANDOUT MOMENT:
Sabine's standout was the flawless creation of the "archival" footage. Never would I have fathomed that the photographs and footage of the 1930's onwards were actually made in tandem with the modern footage in 1996.
Omar's standout was the karaoke scene. The intentionally awful cover of Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" was probably my favourite sequence. A beautifully shot scene and the comedic peak of the film. Definitely got a laugh out of me.
SOUNDTRACK HIGHLIGHT:
Minnie Riperton - "Loving You"
The Roots - "Silent Treatment"
