BATTLE ROYALE (2001) - dir. KINJI FUKASAKU
a movie that sparked a million other pieces of media. arguably the beginning of PUBG video games. it is exactly what a cult film should be, and a masterwork of directorial and editorial teams.
"Before Squid Game was even invented, cult director Kinji Fukasaku caused a sensation with his dystopian bloodbath, Battle Royale. Based on a controversial novel by Kōshun Takami, this highly political and adrenaline-charged movie adds a modern twist to the classic Lord of the Flies scenario." - mubi
It's another film classic that I am incredibly late to watching, and I beyond excited to catch up on the years of content and obsession I've so far missed out on. I do recognise that maybe some of the ridiculous charm is no longer applicable when watching this content in a post-livestreaming-execution-society.
The treatment of the female characters stood out to me, I adored that they were allowed the more "expected" roles of peace-seekers and care-takers, as well as my girl Mitsuko who immediately becomes a blood hungry killer.
I love this movie so much.
