Surfacing is dedicated to left-field songwriters and composers, and highlights local and international artists exploring new and interesting musical territories.
The show is hosted by musician, curator and arts worker Luke M de Zilva.
Tonight's theme is inspired by by a Wikipedia rabbit-hole I went down, which was inspired by the return of springtime birdsong in my garden. I read that the difference between a bird call and a bird song is that "song is usually delivered from prominent perches, although some species may sing when flying". The part "from prominent perches" felt unexpectedly poetic for a factual Wiki article and it was stuck in my head for the rest of the day – so that’s the theme. Music that sings out across the distance, carries with the wind, music that feels prominent or important in their melodrama, and songs broadly about spring.
