Surfacing is dedicated to experimental and outsider songwriters and composers exploring interesting musical territories.
Each year since starting at fbi I’ve done a show based on music twice the length of the average song released in the past year. The long story short is that music is getting shorter, drastically. Last year mainstream music was 30 seconds shorter than the year before. Which means many things, one of them being that music as an artform continues to be commodified and guided in its form by non-artists – expectations of the music industry and mainstream listeners. Fortunately, fbi.radio and definitely this show is not-so-much about that. So this year, rather than double the average length for the year, I’m beginning an annual show of my favourite long-form music in general, all 10-minutes-and-up. And I hope what I’ll be able to do tonight is play you some things that might be a different experience of longer music from what you’re used to or expect.
