Surfacing is dedicated to experimental and outsider songwriters and composers exploring interesting musical territories.

Harrie Hastings was covering In The Pines on fbi.radio last week and when he was giving my show a kindly shoutout he described it as ‘softly startling’. And those two words that he seemingly just came up with in that moment have absolutely captured everything I do, not only with this show but also with my own music output but had never really found the words to describe it so simply and effectively. I can’t believe it to be honest. And with that in mind, tonight’s playlist theme is indeed called ‘softly startling’ and it’s about music that is just that – beautiful, abstract, music that blossoms in unexpected ways, all of these things condensed into two hours of music.
