Music and movement is a part of our evolution. It is the language we learned when our voices weren’t being heard. When we were silenced, our songs carried what speech could not. When our languages were forbidden, rhythm preserved identity. Every beat became a heartbeat. Every melody became a memory.
Inimitable musician, producer and DJ, Sevy (Sim) takes us on a musical journey from his childhood memories of growing up in the 90s, to his current process behind making tracks. King and Sim dissect the difference between a producer and DJ, and the need for intentionality in every single step of music making as Black creatives.
A Language We Learned is a month-long Race Matters residency led by King Baba, centring Black Afro-diasporic creatives across so-called Australia through storytelling, conversation and music. The series is supported by technical producer and creative collaborator Prinitha Theverajah, with creative mentorship from Shareeka Helaluddin and Binta Yade, and artwork by Tim Worton.
