Race Matters x Yung Prodigy / Rivers of Memory

22.03.26
A screen recording of an audio workspace by Sehej and Leya that is collaged over a video of them flying a kite over Parramatta river at night, and small images of memories that they have shared in their brief but transformative friendship
Aired on 22.03.26, 10:00am

From the rivers of Peru, the mountains of Gyeonggi-do, to the Cumberland Highway, exploring what it means to be and live and remember in relation to place.

Our first episode in collaboration with abolitionist youth organisation Yung Prodigy, after a mentorship exploring radical radio from the roots up. Two debut works by Lucy Norton and a newfound colalbroation between Leya and Sehej Kaur Sehmbhi. The many sounds, textures and frays that tether us to place, family or memory.

SOIL was a radio mentorship designed for young people through the model of liberatory radio and community-centred health. It spanned 6 workshops, shared meals, new friendships and new audio ventures.

Memory River by Lucy Norton
An archive of some of Lucy’s important familial and ancestral history in a non-linear way, outside of the bounds of Western notions of archiving and capturing information. Lucy and her mother Charo do this while cooking and eating; sharing time and space together. This is a collaboration between mother, daughter, and the stories that live within and between them.

Where Your Warmth Lingers by Sehej Kaur Sembhi & Leya
A soundscape founded in a new friendship and an affinity for discordant and lush soundscapes. Exploring their journeying through so-called Sydney, the dissonances and parallels, and moments of reprieve and comfort. This piece is a testament of community, friendship and soundwaves that allow us to dream of an alternate, liberated world.
