Our very special guest today, introducing the wonderful, insightful and amazing artist Ashely behind the music project Chuey! Ashley brings in the emotion with his euphoric, gut wrenching and a sound inspired by their Taiwanese heritage. With the singles ‘Ocean Arcade’ and ‘Heritage’ we get a snippet of a taste of what we can expect from Chuey’s upcoming album Playwright which is out TODAY! How exciting!
Having listened to the album in full, I’ve experienced swirling emotions, as Ashley’s symphonic and electronic arrangements have pulled me into their past. I’ve stood next to him at their piano recitals, needing dough in their family restaurant, and even, when they’ve felt the most alone, staring with him at nature, unafraid to see its beautiful imperfections.

This episode was presented to you by Zara Upfold and produced by Kass Vincent. Out of the Box is recorded at the fbi station in Redfern, which is on unceded Gadigal Land. We pay our respects to Gadigal elders past and present and recognise the ongoing colonial violence committed across this country. Wherever you’re tuning in from in so-called Sydney, the land always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
