Good meowning, everybunny, this Thursday's Bento Box is recommended by a dear listener, Mark!
Summer Whales was a two-piece band from Kyoto formed in August 2022 out of the members’ university light music club. Initially focused on cover bands, the duo (then trio – with bassist Daiki Tsukuda) soon decided to try doing original songs as well. Summer Whales drew influences from grunge and post-punk, covering bands from Pale Waves to Fugazi in its beginning days, eventually growing to channel them into their own musical expression. Aoi themself cites Oasis and the Gallagher brothers’ Cool Britannia as their first musical inspirations, comparing their free-spiritedness to Ultraman or Kamen Rider.
Summer Whales was Aoi (vocalist, guitarist, and composer) and Ryo Kubo (guitarist). The duo shares a deep passion for rock music, which has become a defining aspect of Summer Whales’ distinctive identity; it had been inactive since October 2024.
