On this episode of Mi Gente/My People, Vanessa Andres is joined by Michelle Yanez-Olivares, the community builder, strategist, and storyteller behind Amiga Mia @soy_amigamia — a digital platform celebrating Latine culture across Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
Michelle shares the journey of building Amiga Mia, reflects on growing up Latine in so-called Australia, and unpacks the cultural weight of Spanglish, machismo, and migration. The conversation dives deep into the intersections of the Latine experience, and how we honour community memory — like the closure of Fairfield’s iconic La Torre cake shop.
We also talk about Michelle’s latest project: hosting ¡Que Funny! — the first-ever Latine comedy showcase at the Sydney Comedy Festival.
