“I started recording music in a community arts studio in Tassie, It’s really cool to be able to release in a similar community and space as an adult now.”
When I came across Shewita, a singer based out of Naarm, it felt like both a renaissance and revisitation of my childhood. Shewita is a singer-songwriter who, though refuses to put just one label on her music, broadly pays homage to the mosaic of sounds that dominated the Y2K era.
She's no stranger to fbi with her most recent EP 'Canvas' becoming a part of our weekly rotation back in June. Released through Music In Exile, it is a 3-year tapestry of sounds. Brushstrokes of gospel, R&B, and soul are layered over a glaze of pop and dance.
“It’s more eclectic than I had originally planned, and for that reason, it feels like a true reflection of how much I want to keep exploring the vastness of music”
One moment, ‘Used To It’ puts you back in the diary entries of Alicia Keys with raw gospel-jazz production and vocals, while ‘Navigator’ puts you into a cosmic electronic vessel that breaks into the atmosphere of bouncy disco pop.
Head to Shewita’s Substack for weekly deep-dives into the making of Canvas and support her music through her Bandcamp.
