Blush is a fierce WA four piece with full middle-fingers up to anyone standing in their way. With a mission statement of reclaiming rage in alternative rock for women, Blush contrasts fashionable and cutting edge aesthetic direction with unapologetic grit.
They launched onto the scene with ‘Watch You Bleed’, a hauntingly nostalgic turn-of-century-esque single that sees frontrunner Skye put on a chorus worthy of a rainy breakup sequence, thunder and all. The band’s strength is evident on this track; dramatic drums that fill every corner, a guitar presence that guides you through the ebb and flow of the energy of the track, peaking at a very satisfying solo that drives home the angst and anarchic release that the song works to deliver.
Their current release, ‘Embarrassed 4 U’, is a processing tool for the internal dialogue that seeks to keep you down. Born from the very real lived experience of being told that ‘you’re not behaving how other people think you should’, the lyrics are poignant and are delivered with a spoken-word swagger, bound to get the head nodding and the arms flailing. The accompanying music video (the band's first) demonstrates Blush’s creative depth; brainchild of their bassist Holly, the action packed and spaghetti filled display deserves a couple of rewatches.
Sold out shows with just two songs available to streaming, hand printed and sewn merch made from op-shop finds, and the demonstrated ability to switch genres up without losing a beat: Blush is clearly here to make a mark, whether you’re keeping up or not.
