A new sound pedagogy series by fbi.radio
After 21 years as a vital pillar of Sydney music, arts and culture, fbi.radio takes its next step into the future. Enter Soundwaves: an audio education series helmed by two of our legacy programs, All the Best and Race Matters.
As part of Soundwaves fbi.radio is launching two new projects this year. Giving audiomakers foundational skills to tell the stories that matter to them, and offering immediate pathways to join a community of creatives; advancing their skills and practice as independent makers and opening broadcast outcomes. These are two original, online audio education programs, filling a vital gap across the arts, media and education sectors.
The Audio Storytelling Mentorship is a 12-week online learning course to teach foundational audio production and narrative skills, delivered by fbi.radio's All The Best in collaboration with the Community Media Training Organisation.
Listening Through is a six month critical, experimental listening studies syllabus in the form of online sessions delivered by Race Matters. Co-designed by Race Matters Executive Producer Shareeka Helaluddin, with artists Jon Tjhia & Gabi Briggs, they’ll be inviting sound artists to share their practices and explore sound as a socio-political material. Alongside Access Lab & Library, designer Rekha Dhanaram and technologist Janey Li, the syllabus will also be creating an immersive online format and archive.
The diminishment of places to learn audio practice has reduced the number of ways for emerging creatives to discover and develop critical storytelling skills. It has also closed the door on opportunities that made audio storytelling nationally accessible and connected. Listening Through and The Audio Storytelling Mentorship have been developed in tandem as a pilot program of educational online courses in response to the dwindling of free, open opportunities for young creatives.
They hope to cultivate a national community of young and emerging artists and audio creatives. Together, these educational opportunities will explore creative practice, critical thinking, deeper listening and open a space for diverse voices and stories to be shared in a safer and supportive environment.
fbi.radio has long been at the forefront of critical and cutting-edge programming. We’re excited to bring forward these two new programs to invite people to learn, connect and experiment.
